Alpinestars Supertech R Vented Boots

How many times have we all been out on a hot day and enjoyed ourselves so much that we have ended up spending all day out, instead of the “promised” couple of hours, getting home and prising off hot boots. Thats not so bad, it's whats lurking underneath that is the problem. After fumigating the house several times, and having the rest of the family treated at A & E for fume inhalation, it can be deducted pretty quickly that those boots aren't doing anybody any favours. Time for a change maybe?

Well Alpinestars may have the answer to this in the shape of the vented Supertech R boot, which is closely based on the actual boots developed for and worn by racers the world over.

This revolutionary boot design has been in circulation for a few years now, but it has evolved every year alongside the development of the racers boots, adding new features when they are proven on the track.

Even from the first glimpse over these boots it is apparent that there really isn't anything quite like them, and quite frankly, I don't think there actually is in all fairness.

One of the first striking features that you'll notice is the fact that the Supertech design actually is comprised of two boots, an inner and an outer. this unusual feature came about from track side research, as it became apparent that the ankle and lower leg is an incredibly weak part of the body and will hyperextend through excessive ankle twisting, causing in some cases, irreparable damage.

Alpinestars looked at this problem extensively, and found that the structure of a standard boot could not be reinforced to the extent required without losing freedom of movement, and creating unnecessary bulk.

The result of this research was found in the Supertech design.

The Supertech inner boot (or bootie), is the part of the boot that actually has the task when called upon to resist this twisting tendency, via a patented four link system that effectively links the calf collar to the reinforced heel cup. The inner boot is made from a very lightweight mesh fabric which covers most of the inner boots surface, and allows the air that enters the outer boot to get through to the riders feet, helping them stay cool.

The supertech R shown in it's two main constituent parts, the inner bootie (foreground), and the outer boot (background). Note the articulated link connecting the armoured heel cup to the calf collar on the inner bootie. This is a very simple (and patented) design which allows natural degrees of movement for the ankle, but prevents and eliminates excessive twisting between the foot and ankle.

The protection continues onto the outside edges of the inner boot that are attached to the sole, but not at the sides to allow the sole to flex naturally with the foot, but at the same time providing side impact protection. Glued to the bottom of the boot is a thin fine rubber sole with variations in thickness along the soles length, to aid unidirectional flex.

The bootie is held to the foot by an internal lacing system, which draws around the front of the shin, leaving the foot free from any undue pressure, but is still secured to the lower leg safely. The lace is actually a Carbon/Kevlar mix to ensure a long service life and to avoid fraying, and displays the technological depths Alpinestars have gone to to perfect this design.

The inner bootie is held securely to the riders foot by this very thin looking but ultra strong Carbon/Kevlar lace designed to keep weight and bulk down, yet allow for a long service life.

To finish off the features of the inner boot, there is a small shoehorn shaped piece of polyurethane connected to the heel cup that protects the Achilles tendon from cuts or punctures.

The outer however is another story. As the inner boot effectively protects the Achilles tendon, ankle joint, and outside sole edges, the outer has other worries to deal with.

Firstly, the impact and slide protection factors, most of which are dealt with by the sturdy heel assembly, which is made from polyurethane, and is incredibly tough. However, this material can only stand a relatively low duration of friction before softening, which then creates grip on the surface it is sliding along on, which could cause the ankle to turn. To avoid this, Alpinestars have used a small Magnesium casting mounted on the outside edge at the base of the heel to keep the heel armour off the road, so it can slide freely.

The heel portion also features small meshed areas which effectively allow hot air out to aid ventilation for the sole of the foot, along with a replaceable plastic capping which is an additional piece of slide protection in this area of the boot.

The sole of the boot itself has had the same degree of thought put into it too. The pattern on the sole allows for a good level of grip, but at the same time is patterned to allow an exceptionally good degree of movement in all natural directions. The mid sole also features a rigid section buried in between the sole and the interior of the outer boot to provide torsional control, and limits any excessive flexing or bending, eliminating, or at least minimising possible twist induced injuries.

The sole of the outer boot is patterned to allow for natural flex but is substantially braced at the mid-sole to provide additional protection against dangerously excessive torsional movement. To the front of the sole there is a wrap around section covering the inside front edge, which protects the toe of the boot from scuffing, with the now common interchangeable Alpinestars toe slider mounted on the outside front edge.

Moving up to the Shin and Calf area of the boot, it can be seen that the Shin plate has a very exaggerated profile, which juts out from the top edge , tapering down its length to the point where it meets the rubber air intake at the base of the Shin area. This in turn creates a very unique shape overall, which is for good reason.

The boot was originally developed between the Honda GP factory team and Alpinestars as an exercise in rider aerodynamics, which eventually culminated in to the well regarded range topper we have here.

Looking at the overall shape does confirm this fact, as even the top of the boot leg itself has a silicon lined microfibre gaiter to effectively seal and grip the boot to the riders trousers, making the two parts one for air to flow more easily. At lower speeds this doesn't seem apparent, but at higher speed, the internals of the boot are only ventilated by the air intakes and exhausts on the boot, and not down the leg, as in traditional designs and is very effective.

The micro ratchet strap calf retention is well positioned, easy to use, and is replaceable in the event of an accident so the boot is not an expensive write off. The area covering the Calf is made from injection moulded polyurethane, and is shaped aerodynamically at the rear, partly concealing the ratchet mechanism to neatly integrate it to lessen the chances of damaging the binding in an off.

One thing that does strike you when you first wear them is that the boot is incredibly comfortable, and definitely on a par with a good quality touring boot, which is something quite unexpected from something like a race boot.

Because the boot is in fact two separate pieces of footwear together, the extra sole thickness inherited does help eliminate otherwise annoying high frequency buzzes from the riders pegs. This double layering makes the feedback from the sole very vague at first, but does subside fairly quickly with use, as the only real factor of breaking in is done through the foot bed in the inner boot.

The inside temperature of the boot, even at low speed whilst say filtering is not excessive, and even if the feet do sweat they are dried out rapidly once things speed up.

Only after spending some time with these boots do you realise what has been achieved; an incredibly easy to use and comfortable product, with class leading safety features wrapped in a stylish exterior. Quite something.

CONCLUSION

Expensive but impressively specced boot with clever details and care spent on creating an effective Ankle and Sole protection system, along with an astounding ventilation system that works very well.

The boot features outstanding comfort and isolation from annoying high frequency buzzes from the riders footpegs, which is a common problem amongst other boot designs due to the sole being so thin.

Alpinestars have created a truly unique package, ultra safe, ultra comfortable and ultra stylish boot, no wonder so many riders on the track wear them.

They are even easy to look after thanks to being made from synthetic Microfibre, which has the same properties as leather, but is easier to clean and more resilient in use.

Topped off with an array of available spare component parts for service or repair, owning a pair of these need'nt be just for a couple of summers, justifying more the original purchase price.

Alpinestars have made a product comparable to the race ready Daytona race boots, at a saving in comparison, and are a track day essential, and remember, that's where they were developed after all!!

Alpinestars SMX-R Gore Tex Boots

Yes, before you say anything they were shiny and black not too long ago. (Luckily there isn’t enough room on them to write, “Clean me”, or alternatively, “I wish my wife was this dirty”)

Alpinestars SMX-R Gore Tex Boots

RRP: £215.00

Date Purchased: November 2008

Mileage so far: 2000

Mmm, waterproof boots, so waterproof that if water gets in, it can’t out, smell funny, look clonky, heavy and not unlike something James Herriot would have worn on a farm.

Nice.

Well, on the other hand, what about an all weather boot that can be worn without looking like an escaped Oompa Loompa at a fancy dress party, and have the thought, detailing and design like a top end race boot.

Now that’s an idea.

Alright, alright, calm down! Alpinestars are not the first to have thought of this, but great ideas have to be seen through to make a great product come to fruition, and with Alpinestars, and this product, nothing seems to have been forgotten.

The Supertech boot design is a classic in it’s own right, and all of the main features of this design have been grafted in to the SMX-R such as the exoskeleton type heel/ankle/calf protection, integral calf/shin ratchet system and outside calf zip closure.

The SMX-R has been a gradual evolution since 2006 when the very first variation of this great mid range boot appeared, but add the virtues of Gore Tex as a Lining, it has become a fully fledged weather resistant road/race boot. It keeps the wearer comfortable, supported, protected, fairly cosy, and dare I say it, pretty snazzy in the footwear fashion stakes. Shame to get them dirty really.

Anyway, as previously mentioned, the SMX-R Gore Tex carries the Supertech style exoskeleton heel protection, which extends to protect the Achilles tendon, as well as being vented vertically along the outside edges of the heel reinforcement. The bending areas between the heel and calf, upper foot and shin are catered for with softly padded ribbed leather panels. I presume to keep costs down, and not to merge model identity, the heel does not contain a bolt on replacement plate like the Supertech, so is not replaceable if the rear of the heel section becomes damaged.

Simplicity itself, despite having a very obvious lack of moving mechanical joints the SMX-R Gore Tex is full of subtle detailing (even when they're covered in muck)

The inner sides (the side that rests against the side of the bike, if you were talking in the back, NOT paying attention!), of the boot features a stitched in inner heel pad to stop the leather surrounding the arch and the heel being scuffed when the boots are on the pegs. The outside side (the side not resting against the side of the bike, PAY ATTENTION!) has more plastic reinforcement which covers the ankle area, (is vented too), this carries on up to the ratchet closure at the top of the calf of the boot as one piece to maintain maximum strength, and minimising twisting between the foot and ankle.

Holey moley! Thanks to all these holes the Gore Tex lining can actually do it’s job of keeping the boot dry, and fresh inside.

The rest of the leather structure of the boots is covered in various areas with tiny perforations, not unlike the Vented Supertechs, which the SMX-R seems to closely mimic. The upper boot is fitted with a good strong shin plate, (again riddled with more holes, some bigger than others), and substantial looking nylon strips over both big toe areas to stop gear selectors damaging the boot uppers.

“Full of holes, that’s going to work then!?”, I hear you cry, well actually, it does.

If we remember from the blurb, (Page 86, at the top Harris!) Gore Tex is a two way material, keeps the wet out, wicks moisture away, and is dry on the inside. And what exactly do feet have the uncanny knack of doing in boots? Sweating, and subsequently making the boots stink like hell, and staying like it for the rest of the time you own them. However, the holes that are all over the surface of the boot, allow through air into the boot, when moving, which then keeps the lining aired, so effectively helping the boot stay relatively odour free, and uncannily dry.

To finish off the interior of the boots, there is a removable dense foam foot bed, which does take the shape of the riders foot over a short period of time, and despite only being thin, does insulate the sole of the boot, not only from the cold, but effectively from annoying vibration from the bikes pegs.

In fact, this is one of the things that does become apparent is the lack of the Supertech type inner boot, which isn’t a bad thing, but is something that brings to light the range crossing nature of the SMX-R’s design simplicity. However, the calf section of the boot makes up for this by having an elasticated piece along one side of the zipper, and on the opposite side of the boot, an elasticated panel outside, with an adjustable Velcro leather pad. They are there to allow a degree of security, but the ankle can still move comfortably when the ratchet is securely done up.

Finishing off the overall “Supertech/SMX family” look is the two colour sole, wrapping around part of the front of the toe of the boot, to protect the area from scuffing. The soles are fairly grippy on damp tarmac, which comes in handy for shorter riders who might be balancing on the front of one foot whilst waiting at traffic lights. Also, the outside front edge of the boot has the Alpinestars universal replacement toe sliders

You gotta have sole. These one’s just happen to be very hardwearing, and usefully grippy on wet tarmac. The toe sliders are the standard clip on interchangeable type used across most of the Alpinestars boot range. Note also the outside calf zipper position, with the narrow elastic panel alongside for flexibility. Velcro is sooo eighties dahrlings. (that’s why the little bit they do have is hidden inside)

The main features that really stand out asides the look and feel of the boot are really minor touches, such as the zipper positioning being on the outside of the boot, as opposed to the inside of the calf/ankle.

Traditional designs all seem to have a zipper that is on the inside of the ankle/calf area, which is the generally covered by a Velcro lined leather flap. It’s not the worst design ever, but it does not keep the boot 100% sealed, and water eventually seems to work it’s way past the flap, and then the zipper. To add insult to injury, the Velcro flap is expected to stay put around an area that has to flex, and consequently comes apart on a regular basis, catching the frame and pegs, and ultimately, just driving you mad, and giving you wet feet.

Alpinestars seem to have come up with really, personally I think, the best solution, (and another Supertech design idea) by simply putting the zipper on the outside of the boot. The boot can move freely, there is no Velcro to muck about with, and water has less of a chance of getting inside as the zipper is positioned higher up, plus the zipper itself has a simple but nifty Velcro tab which stops the zip toggle from flapping about, which then is covered by the ratcheted shin section.

The one thing about these boots which may get people thinking twice, is the fact that the boot is really designed for trousers to fit in to, it is a road style boot after all, but after riding through all sorts of weather combined with Alpinestars Leather track pants (some might think a mad idea), The calf closure seems to be an effective seal to keep it all out. In fact, the only way to really get any water through them is to ride head long into a flood, which I had to do about a month after the boots were bought, on my way home in the dark. I was very impressed, as the lining let by literally a tiny dribble of water into both boots, fantastic really considering my bike has no lower fairing.

If this still cannot keep you from being utterly inconsolable with doubt, then over trousers would make a 100% seal in all instances, but really, this is just an additional waste of money in hindsight. Just think, you could spend the money on useful things like some Titanium toe sliders instead or some Deely boppers.

Above: Don’t be wet! It does what it says on the label Mabel

CONCLUSION

Alpinestars have really created a practical good looking stop gap between the Race boot and the more agricultural looking touring boots that are available on the market currently.

£215 is a reasonable sum of money, but that is also a halfway price group between top end boots, and the more basically specified budget offerings, but have justified the costs by heavily integrating the features from the top of the range Supertech race boot.

The only obvious real competition from a big name as such, is the Sidi Vertigo Mega Gore boot, but at £15 more than the SMX-R, it is a tough act to take on, despite being a technically minded design, with an intricate calf adjustment/retention system and heel shock absorber of the Vertigo, good ideas, but how good compared to the simple well thought out design of the SMX-R, even down to the thicker longer lasting sole of the SMX. Another thing to mention briefly is, the Alpinestars sole and uppers are more spacious, with less of a formed arch, so even flatfooted riders will be comfy, whereas the Sidi tends to be a tighter less generous sizing on the sole, and “toe box”.

All is not rosy though, as there are two points, not bad, but points nevertheless, is the ratchet system, and the initial fit of the boot.

The sealing of the boot relies mainly on the calf and shin sections of the upper boot clamping firmly together, sounds blatantly obvious, I know. However, if the boot is plainly “done up” whilst sitting down on a chair, with the foot flat to the floor (as done generally), you will find the boot will get draughty, down the shin, causing a nice place for rain water to go down. However, this can be overcome very easily by leaning forward on the chair when you are putting them on, and pointing the foot down in the boot so you go tip toe, then ratchet them firmly up, problem solved.

Strap up! One of the weaknesses with the boot relies on the seal between the riders trouser leg and the upper halves of the boot. Practice getting them on with the upper Calf ratchets adjusted up properly, (5 minutes to suss 1st time) then you’ll be laughing.

Looks are deceiving with the SMX-R, as it does not look like a bulky boot, although first thoughts were mixed when I rode off for the first time, as the initial feedback from the pegs and the toes was vague. I believe this to be the foot bed going through it’s initial shaping, as after about an hour, they felt as sensitive as anything.

Good value (considering the features/design), good looking, hardwearing, and do the job impressively, you’d be hard pushed to match the performance and cost, especially with those Deely Boppers you’ve been promising yourself for ages.

Alpinestars T-Breeze Airflow Jacket

I know what you're all thinking, what a fine figure of a man, I know. Don't keep on or it'll go to my head (which is out of shot for product clarity, I don't want to avert your attention away from the matter in hand). As for the threads, top branding, CE approved armour, shower proof liner, less than £150, and it's a good bit of kit to boot. Can't be bad.

Textiles and Leather, have always been greatly debated, which gives more protection, which is the best value, what looks better, so on and so forth.

Well the days of the heavy waxed Belstaff jackets are luckily behind us, and the world of Textile bike clothing beckons, and is becoming more and more popular. Thanks to an ever expanding range of styles, protection as good as being on a par with leather, and good enough to make any traditional leatherhead think seriously about what they’re going to buy next time around.

From most angles, the T Breeze seems to ooze quality with it's excellent finish all over which is something that sets it apart from most budget offerings. Like most well respected manufacturers, quality and price always seem to be close company, but sometimes there are some exceptions, this jacket is definitely one of them.

A nice feature with this jacket is the elasticated waistband zipper which will still allow an excellent degree of freedom when zippered up to any Alpinestars trousers with a matching waistband zipper facility. Because of this, it makes for a cooler option for trackdays, or even touring in hot weather, which this particular jacket has done in temperatures up to 40 degrees C, and still performed admirably.

Intended primarily as a Summer jacket, its vented, shower proof, hardwearing, and armoured, oh and it can zipper up to any Alpinestars trousers, so it can be used on track days, all for less than £150.

Add this to the branding, and Alpinestars have just baked their hotcakes, and they don’t need a salesman.

There has to be a catch, especially as it’s a top brand manufacturers name spattered over it, there has to be something somewhere, a cut corner to justify such a cheap jacket. Actually, if anybody can find ANYTHING, then they’ve bought a seconds.

Well here's the shower proof liner in all it's naughty nakedness; in fact this is the only naff looking part of the whole garment, but it does fit in to the jacket in no time at all, and is er, showerproof. The main body of the liner zippers in to the outer jacket, whilst the arms are attached to the outer jacket by loops and poppers, to save dragging out the arms every time the jacket is taken off.

...And this here is the liner installed showing the duplicated pockets, so you'll never accidently leave anything in the outer pockets to drown in a down pour, plus it means everything is to hand without having to unzip the liner to get to the pockets.

Ok, so it can be said, truthfully, the armour isn’t as generously sized as others, but it is still CE approved, and the jacket has a rather flimsy shower proof liner, but it can be taken out, and zippered back in, in a couple of minutes, and it works really well.

Alright then, there is one thing, one little gripe, the mesh that covers the front of the jacket is coarse enough to let vast quantities of air (after all, that is what it’s supposed to do) and unfortunately every insect sharing the same airspace. Ok, so that’s going to happen, but they don’t splat, or bounce off, just become part of the mesh. Yummy.

There could be other gripes, mainly how hot you get when in traffic, which is a no brainer really, but things cool back down icy cold very soon when back on an open road, and back up to speed. Just try to get that sort of comfort from a leather jacket on a warm day, let alone a hot one.

Here is a shot of the jacket with the liner completely removed. The jacket still looks fairly substantial, which is certainly the case although this does not compromise the incredible lightweight feel when on, or indeed it's refrigeration ability when on the move.

Well this jacket was tried out on a holiday to Italy, 2500 miles of varying temperatures, from 18 to 40 degrees, yes, 40 degrees, and it performed impeccably. Alright, yes, I did get hot, when things slowed down, but at over 50mph at these temperatures dropped down to the extent that it felt like I had walked into a fridge. Pretty extraordinary really, and all from this from a sub £150 jacket.

I am most probably starting to sound like some shopping channel wannabe, but this is the only ultra reasonably priced bike product that I have parted cash over, and really been taken aback by what an exceptional piece of clothing I’ve bought in to.

Conclusion

Great value at under £150, you have a top branded jacket that does all it should be able to for a summer garment, and effectively, and then some. The finish, materials, and tailoring belie the low price tag, along with the CE approved shoulder and elbow armour. The foam back and chest padding is also a nice touch.

The only thing that highlights the price compromise is the shower proof liner, which when removed has the feel and looks of a lower quality than the rest of the garment, but when it is zippered in, it fits perfectly, and works a treat

IF YOU DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE, THEN YOUR WARDROBE WILL HATE YOU FOR NEGLECTING IT.

ARAI HELMETS CELEBRATE 25 YEARS SUPPORTING THE TT

The 2009 Isle of Man TT races will mark 25 years of Arai Helmets officially supporting the TT.

From Dunlop to Hislop, McCallen to McGuinness, Fogarty to Jefferies; the legendary Japanese helmet is synonymous with the TT and have been atop some of its finest victories. But it’s not just the island’s greats that choose Arai, as each year up to 80% of competitors at the Isle of Man put their faith in the Japanese brand.

In 1983, Arai broke into the European market and the vision of its importer, Ferry Brouwer, was to do more than simply supplying helmets to racers but to offer a race service at every major motorcycle event. Though common practice now, back in the early eighties this level of support simply didn’t exist; Arai set the benchmark.

The first year of the Arai Race Support Service Team at the TT in 1984 was a far cry from the purpose-built unit and two support vans that will be manned by a staff of five at this year’s event; armed with a load of visors and a bucket, Ferry looked after riders Joey Dunlop and Brian Reid from the boot of his car with an Arai flag atop.

Working out of the back of a car wasn’t best practice, let alone great for building the image of a helmet brand, so very soon a dedicated support vehicle was used. Within five years of Arai offering this free service, the number of riders choosing Arai dramatically increased. Victories and compelling approval from prominent users and simply the performance of the product around the Mountain course couldn’t be ignored and by the late nineties up to 80% of the entire TT competitors were using Arai.

For Arai, the TT isn’t solely a brand awareness exercise. The races are also used to gather data and feedback on its products in order to aid development and create a better product for road riders as well as racers. Over the years and across its ranges, especially the new, range-topping RX-7 GP, Arai can hold the TT responsible in helping development to determine vent sizing and position, visor aperture and even the general fit of a helmet.

Over the last 25 years for Arai and its UK arm, Phoenix Distribution, its involvement with the TT has always covered more than just the race service support team and sponsoring riders. The manufacturer’s passion for the races has also seen it financially invest heavily in order to make sure the event continues as it is, most recently with a three-year, big-money sponsorship deal that began in 2007.

Many of the milestones – in fact it used to be all – feature Arai branding and its famous elliptical logo can be found on banners not just along the Mountain course but also at many points around the Island and; even the marshals all wear Arai clothing!

John Wakefield, managing director of Arai’s UK importer, Phoenix Distribution (NW) Ltd, explains: ‘We (Phoenix/Arai) are committed to the TT and will always try to be. We put in a massive investment every year and will continue to do so for 2009, despite the economic downturn. This event is the most demanding race course in the world and each lap the riders travel through so many different elements and conditions at speed that the TT is the ultimate test of our, or any, product. Long may it continue.”

The Arai Race Support Service will also attend the NW200 along with every round of the British Superbike championship. Road riders can also benefit from this free service at a series of public events throughout the year.

SUZUKI HAYABUSA GOES STEREOPHONIC

Stereophonics rock band musician, Richard Jones, has added a second Suzuki to his garage, as the bass guitarist for the chart-topping Welsh group, took delivery of a brand-new Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa last week.

Jones, who only last year opted for a Suzuki B-King, to use for regular visits to the recording studio, decided to add the legendary Hayabusa to his garage after moving out of London and into the country.

"The B-King is a fantastic tool and great fun around London, but now I need to cover much longer distances there was only one choice for me", said Jones. "The Hayabusa has such a reputation, and it's just one of those bikes that everyone should ride at some point. In fact, if I'm being completely honest, the longer distances are a bit of an excuse really. Just don't tell the wife!"

With a power output of nearly 200bhp, the Hayabusa is one of the fastest production machines on the planet, and has been the chosen weapon of choice for several official top-speed record attempts, since the original launch 11 years ago. Completely redeveloped in 2007, the Hayabusa has remained at the top of the hyper-sports tree and continues to maintain its legendary reputation.

Belstaff and the Busa': Richard Jones having a nice day...

The Stereophonics will be playing live later this year at the summer festivals.

Brand new Streetguard 3 suit available in your local BMW dealership now

BMW’s iconic Streetguard Suit has gained legendary status for one obvious reason: it fulfils every motorcycling purpose desirable. With the arrival of the new Streetguard 3, one can be sure that whether faced with sub zero temperatures or the scorching heat of a summer’s day, this little number will keep your mind on the road.

From Streetguard 2 to Streetguard 3, BMW has made significant progress and has adapted the suit to encompass more sophisticated technology, style and comfort.

Radical technological changes made to the new Streetguard 3 include:

C-Change membrane
Coldblack finish Keproshield and Dynatec technology
The use of the new c-change membrane cleverly adapts its pore sizes to suit fluctuating body temperatures ensuring that riders remain comfortable. On cold days the polymer compresses its structure for better insulation. Conversely, when the temperature rises to 18˚C or above, the polymer structure opens allowing excess body moisture to escape.

Other developments include the use of new award winning Coldblack technology on the outer shell, which reflects 80% of the sun’s UV rays, keeping the textile material cool for longer. The outer shell also comprises Keproshield and Dynatec technology providing 20% extra abrasion resistance over the Streetguard 2 providing added protection in case of a fall.

Additional new features of the suit include a high waistband on the trousers, with fleece inner lining for extra insulation, and a waterproof radiation-shielded pocket for a mobile phone.

As for safety, maximum impact-absorbing armour can be found on the elbows, knees, back, shoulders and hips of the suit. To ensure you’re seen from all angles, reflective fabrics on the front and back of the jacket as well as down the sides of the trouser legs will keep you in full view!

The design of this suit supersedes that of its predecessor. BMW have thought of everything from style to comfort to design – the suit has a simple zip down the front of the jacket and a waterproof removable storm collar in addition to being 100% waterproof. Furthermore, ventilation in the upper arms can be adjusted to allow air to flow through the jacket, depending on the level of airing you require!

BMW’s Streetguard 3 suit is priced at £925.00 including VAT. It is available in pure black as a trouser/jacket combination while the jacket also comes in black, grey and orange. BMW Rider Equipment come in a range of sizes from extra small to extra large.

Yamaha to launch limited edition MT01!!!

In September 2004 Yamaha created a whole new ‘Torque Sports’ category with the launch of the remarkable MT-01. Powered by a massive 1,670cc V-twin engine and featuring an aluminium sports chassis, the MT-01 is a truly unique motorcycle that underlines Yamaha’s position as the leading innovator within the powered two wheeler industry.

They feature optimal spring and damping settings which, after intensive testing, have been set to match the unique characteristics of the

These well respected tyres offer good levels of grip combined with strong turning qualities and enhanced wet weather performance. These inherent characteristics are designed to underline the sporting potential of the SP’s aluminium chassis.

Fatter tapered handlebars and machined aluminium handlebar crown

The new MT-01 SP model is equipped with fatter 28.6mm diameter tapered handlebars which are used in place of the standard model’s 25.4mm diameter design. In addition, the SP is also fitted with a machined aluminium handlebar crown and the combination of the new components accentuates the bike’s muscular image and ensures a comfortable and sporty riding position.

Special colour scheme

The focal point is the red and white fuel tank which is complemented by a red front fender and red chrome MT logo on the tank. A new two-tone seat and gold wheels underline the exclusivity of this attractive new SP model.

BMW offer free panniers on their R1200 range...

BMW Motorrad has announced a significant new offer on two of its most iconic and best-selling motorcycles. Customers purchasing a new R 1200 GS or R 1200 GS Adventure from 01 April until 30 September 2009 will receive a complimentary set of BMW Panniers, valued at £459 for the R 1200 GS and £603 for the Adventure. Both prices are recommended retail and inclusive of VAT.

BMW Panniers are the ultimate accessory for the 1200 GS and Adventure models. Not only are they designed to carry luggage and essential supplies when venturing out on a two-wheeled trip of a lifetime, but can also be used everyday for a laptop or brief case.

Customers purchasing a new R 1200 GS from any BMW Motorrad dealership will qualify for a free set of Vario Panniers, capable of carrying a total load of 10kg per pannier and providing a value added benefit of £459.77. These panniers have a unique adjusting mechanism that enables their overall volume to be adapted to suit the environment in which the bike is being ridden. They can be reduced from a combined capacity of 68 litres to 50 litres simply by flipping a bar in each case. This effectively reduces the width of the motorcycle by 120mm, which can prove extremely useful in congested zones when filtering through traffic.

And the new R 1200 GS Adventure is now available with a complimentary set of handmade Aluminium Panniers, providing customers with a value added benefit of £603.15. The rugged aluminium panniers, which are able to carry 20kg and offer a combined capacity of a substantial 82 litres, are often preferred for enduro adventure riding. They can easily be hooked onto the carriers and can be locked using a key coded to the bike.

Tony Jakeman, Marketing Manager for BMW Motorrad UK said: “With the 1200 GS range being the ultimate motorcycles for exploration and adventure, what better accessory to have than a complimentary set of panniers to go with the bikes? With the added value of this fantastic offer combined with our affordable finance packages from BMW Select the ever popular R 1200 GS and Adventure are even better value for money.”

BMW Motorrad has also assembled a number of accessory packages to complement its R 1200 GS models. The new ‘Luggage Packs’ represent even greater value for customers, offering a saving of £100 on retail prices. The Luggage Pack for both the R 1200 GS and GS Adventure includes L/H and R/H inner bags, Top box and mounting kit, locks, a Top box inner bag and tank bag.
